ELKO — The Bureau of Land Management Elko District officials this week said they’ll soon open the application process for a number of seasonal wildland firefighting jobs. The application period runs from Dec. 13 through Jan. 4, 2022 on USAJobs.gov.

The firefighting positions are for outposts in Elko, Carlin, Midas and Wells.

Wildland firefighting positions are temporary—lasting 180 days excluding training and overtime—and last from May through mid-September. To be eligible, applicants must pass a physical exam and drug test, and a “pack test”—hiking three miles over flat terrain while carrying a 45-pound pack, all within 45 minutes.

Several dispatcher positions in Elko are also available. Applications for those jobs are accepted through Jan. 11, 2022.

BLM officials said step-by-step instructions on applying for the jobs is online at https://www.nevadafireinfo.org/wildlandfirecareers.
