BLM issues fire prevention order across Nevada

RENO – Dry conditions and high fire risk have led officials at the Bureau of Land Management to prohibit specific fire-related activities on BLM-managed lands. The fire prevention order will be in effect from May 1 through Oct. 31.

The fire prevention order prohibits the use of explosive materials – such as explosive targets or fireworks – and steel component ammunition, on BLM lands. Those who violate the order could be subject to paying to put out the fire as well as covering the cost to rehabilitate burned areas.

Paul Petersen, a fire management officer with BLM in Nevada, said much of the state is experiencing record dry conditions, and severe drought in some places.

“The current, national wildland fire potential outlook indicates that we could be in for a challenge this summer,” Petersen said. “It’s important for the public to understand and comply with the fire prevention order to help keep human-caused wildfires from needlessly damaging natural and cultural resources.”

Additional fire restrictions may be handed down by other agencies operating in the state, including the U.S. Forest Service. Additional information is at https://www.nevadafireinfo.org/.
