ELKO – The Bureau of Land Management this week will begin prescribed fire operations on 51 acres on the west portion of Spruce Mountain, about 36 miles south of Wells. Burning is scheduled for multiple days between Feb. 24 and March 31, weather permitting.
BLM officials said the operations are planned to reduce fire fuels and improve habitat for area wildlife.
“The burn is planned in an area where brush and trees have been thinned to reduce accumulations of fuels and remove hazards which leads to less intense fires in the treated area and provides firefighters a higher probability of containing future wildfires,” said BLM Elko District Fuels Manager Tyson Gripp.
Minimal smoke impacts are expected, officials said.
Burn operations will be conducted by several wildland firefighters with a vehicle with equipment for fire suppression. The fires will be monitored from overhead as well.
