CARSON CITY–Nevada’s State Fire Marshal Division this week announced four winners in the 2021 State of Nevada Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest. The winning artwork will be featured on billboard in Elko, Reno/Sparks, Carson City and Las Vegas during Fire Prevention Week Oct. 3-9.

The winners of this year’s contest are:

  • Sophie Rodriguez-Ramirez – 5th Grade Seeliger Elementary, Carson City
  • Yocelynn Hernandez – 5th Grade Silver Stage Middle, Silver Springs
  • Ragan Beach – 5th Grade Fremont Elementary, Carson City
  • Cage Kordonowy – 5th Grade Fremont Elementary, Carson City

Winners are usually selected from four grade-level categories—grades 1-4, grades 5-6, middle school and high school—however due to COVID-19 challenges, entries were only submitted in one grade category.

“We’d like to thank the Department of Education, students, educators, and parents for their involvement,” said State Fire Marshal Mike Dzyak. “These types of contests help educate our students who can then share lifesaving fire safety information with their families. By working together, we can all keep Nevada fire safe.”

The theme of this year’s contest, as selected by the National Fire Protection Association, was “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.”

In addition to having their artwork on statewide billboards, each student will receive a plaque and their class will receive a visit from the State Fire Marshal with Sparky the Fire Dog for presentation of their award.
