Historians gathering Latino history in Nevada

CARSON CITY – Nevada Department of Transportation this month kicked off an effort to document the history of Latino communities by identifying historically significant places, organizations and people in Nevada.

NDOT is working with historians from Mead & Hunt to gather the information, but is asking members of Nevada’s Latino community to share information.

“We would like information from you so that the history reflects your knowledge and experience,” NDOT officials said. “We welcome information on a wide range of topics – even if they seem common or ordinary – all the way through roughly the year 2000.”

Examples of the types of submissions historians are looking for include places where labor strikes or civil rights demonstrations took place, industries where Latinos played a role, or arts-related sites or people.

Some of the locations may be added to the National Register of Historical Places.
