NSHE Regents appoint new president at Nevada State College
HENDERSON – The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents voted today to approve a four-year contract for DeRionne Pollard to serve as Nevada State College’s president. The vote comes the day after NSC’s ad hoc president search committee recommended Pollard for the position.
Pollard is currently the president of Montgomery College in Maryland, a role she’s held since 2010. She was the first Black woman president of that institution.
Pollard will be the eighth president to serve in the college’s 19-year history and starts her contract Aug. 16 of this year. She’ll be paid just over $367,000 per year, along with a $15,000 a year housing allowance and $8,000 a year car allowance.
“President Pollard is a highly respected educator and administrator. Her experience boosting student success and creating external partnerships at Montgomery College will serve NSC well,” NSHE Chancellor Melody Rose said. “Her knowledge and understanding of our student population affords her the opportunity to tell NSC’s vital story as its primary ambassador. I am confident Dr. Pollard is the right person to lead Nevada State at this time.”
According to her biography, Pollard “led the expansion the infrastructure of the institution, launched the Montgomery College Innovation Fund, and developed and bolstered partnerships with government, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other educational institutions.”
Prior to Montgomery College, Pollard worked her way up at the College of Lake County in Illinois from assistant professor of English to vice president of educational affairs. She then moved on to become administrative and instructional president of Las Positas College in California.
Pollard earned her bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in 1993, a master’s degree in English from Iowa State University in 1995, and a Ph.D. from Loyola University in 2005.
NSC’s 25-member president search committee selected Pollard as one of four finalists for the NSC position. Those finalists interviewed in-person and via live-stream with students, faculty, employees, and community members this week. The committee, which includes members of the Board of Regents, faculty, classified staff, students, and community stakeholders, overwhelmingly recommended President Pollard for the job.
