Potential well-drilling scam in Winnemucca

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s Division of Water Resources this week is warning residents in the Winnemucca area of a potential scam involving well-drilling.

Officials at NDWR said over the past several weeks several victims worked with an unlicensed contractor to have a well drilled on their property.

“In one instance, the victim gave the driller a $6,000 deposit, and has since lost contact with the driller,” NDWR officials said in a statement.

The agency is advising anyone seeking to have a well drilled or plugged to verify the contractor has a valid well-drilling license from NDWR.

To check if an individual or business is licensed, check the NDWR website. Well drillers must also submit notification and receive approval to drill from NDWR before activities can begin.

To confirm if approval has been given, or with other questions or concerns, call NDWR at 775-684-2800 in northern Nevada or 702-486-2770 in southern Nevada.
