ELKO – Volunteers are being sought for Saturday, March 19 to help plant 10,000 sagebrush seedlings in the Cedar Fire burn area near Jiggs. The habitat restoration project is being spearheaded by the Nevada Department of Wildlife and Bureau of Land Management.

The activity runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The family-friendly event includes a free boxed lunch and water during the activity for those who sign up before Saturday.

BLM officials said the drive to the main planting site from the basecamp requires four-wheel drive and high clearance. For those without four-wheel drive, a planting location near the county road is also planned.

The sagebrush seedlings were grown by students in the Wells High School FFA program for planting projects such as this one. The seedlings will replace sagebrush lost in the fire, which burned south of Elko in July 2020.
